Year 1 is the first year of Key Stage 1 and of the national curriculum. Most children are 5 when it starts and turn 6 during the year. Reading moves on quickly: children use phonics to decode words and learn common exception words such as said and friend. In maths they count to 100, learn number bonds within 20 and tell the time to the hour and half past.

This page gathers the sheets that suit Year 1 across maths, English, science, geography and history, plus a few art and music pages. Science covers the topics set for this year: plants, animals, the human body and senses, everyday materials and the seasons.

In Northern Ireland the same age group is in Primary 2, and in Scotland it is roughly Primary 2. Wales uses the name Year 1 too.

    Tests in Year 1

In June, Year 1 children in England take the phonics screening check. A teacher listens as your child reads 40 words aloud, one to one. Some are real words and some are made-up words, often shown as alien names, which show whether your child can sound out a word they have never seen. Children who do not meet the expected standard take it again in Year 2. The sheets on sounds, CVC words and tricky words are gentle practice.

How much should a Year 1 child do at home?

Little and often works best. One sheet two or three times a week is plenty alongside the school reading book. Sit with your child, read the instructions aloud and let them do the thinking. Stop if they are tired: ten calm minutes do more good than half an hour of tears. Mixing subjects helps too, with a science labelling sheet one day and a counting sheet the next.

    Questions parents ask

    What age is Year 1?

Year 1 is for children aged 5 to 6. Most are 5 when the school year starts in September and turn 6 before it ends. Summer-born children are often among the youngest in the class.

Do these sheets match what my child does at school?

They are written against the Year 1 content in the National Curriculum in England. Schools choose their own order and schemes, though, so your child may meet a topic earlier or later than these pages suggest. Use them to practise something from class or to look ahead.

Can I use these sheets for home education?

Yes. Because each sheet follows a Year 1 topic, the page can help you plan or check what you have covered. Home-educated children do not have to follow the national curriculum, so pick whatever suits your child.
