This free, printable worksheet helps children find half and a quarter of an amount, such as half of 8 or a quarter of 12. The last part turns it around: if half is 6, what was the whole amount?

It prints on one A4 page, and the answers print on a second page for grown-ups.

    Halves and quarters

Half means 1 of 2 equal parts. A quarter means 1 of 4 equal parts. To find half of 10, share 10 things into 2 equal groups: there are 5 in each. To find a quarter, share into 4 equal groups, or halve and then halve again. Half of 12 is 6, and half of 6 is 3, so a quarter of 12 is 3.

    How to help at home

Use real things your child can move, such as grapes, buttons or toy cars. Put out 8 and ask your child to share them onto 2 plates, then onto 4 plates. Ask whether the groups are equal, because a half or a quarter only counts when every part is the same size. The sheet uses the ½ and ¼ signs: read them aloud as 'half of' and 'a quarter of' if they are new.

    Why it matters

Halves and quarters are the first fractions children meet, in Year 1. In Year 2 they add thirds and three quarters, and write number sentences such as ½ of 6 = 3. Sharing into equal groups is also the start of division.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn halves and quarters?

Halves and quarters are in Year 1 of the National Curriculum in England, when children are 5 to 6. They come back in Year 2, alongside thirds and three quarters.

Why halve, then halve again, for a quarter?

Because 4 equal parts is the same as splitting each half into 2. Half of 20 is 10, and half of 10 is 5, so a quarter of 20 is 5. It is often easier than sharing into 4 groups in one go.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
