    Spotting the pattern

When you count in 10s from zero, every number ends in 0. When you count in 5s from zero, the numbers end in 5 or 0, taking turns. Pointing this out helps children check their own answers and see that counting in steps follows a rule.

    How to help at home

Count in 10s with ten fingers held up at a time, and in 5s with one hand at a time. Coins are great too: count a line of 5p or 10p coins together. Try counting backwards as well, which children find harder.

    Why it matters

Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s in Year 1 is the start of the times tables. It also helps with telling the time later, because the minute hand moves in steps of five.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn to count in 5s and 10s?

Counting in multiples of twos, fives and tens is part of Year 1 maths in the National Curriculum in England, when children are 5 to 6.

My child finds counting backwards hard. Is that normal?

Yes, very. Counting back takes more working out. Practise a little at a time, and use a number line or a hundred square to help.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
