Reception is the year most children turn five. It follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework rather than the national curriculum. By the summer, teachers judge how each child is doing against 17 early learning goals, spread across seven areas such as communication, literacy, mathematics and understanding the world.

The sheets on this page match the goals parents ask about most. For reading and writing there is alphabet tracing, the sounds sh, ch and th, CVC words, rhymes and first tricky words. For maths there is counting, number bonds to 10, adding to 10 and shape patterns. Others look at the seasons, weather, the five senses, festivals and the jobs people do.

In Northern Ireland this year is Primary 1, and in Scotland it is roughly Primary 1. Wales also calls it Reception.

What do children learn in Reception?

By the end of the year, the early learning goals expect children to say a sound for each letter of the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs, blend sounds to read simple words, and write recognisable letters. In maths, they should know numbers to 10 well, recall number bonds to 5 and some to 10, and count beyond 20. They also talk about the people around them, the natural world and the seasons. The framework says the goals are not a curriculum, so each school teaches in its own way.

How to use these sheets at home

Keep it short. Ten minutes at the kitchen table is plenty at this age, and stopping while your child still wants more works better than pushing on. Say the sounds aloud together, count real objects before counting pictures, and let your child colour as they go. Pencil control is still developing, so a chunky pencil or crayon is fine. If a sheet feels too hard, put it away and try again in a few weeks.

    Questions parents ask

    What age is Reception?

Children start Reception in the September after their fourth birthday, so most are 4 when the year begins and turn 5 during it. The matching year is Primary 1 in Northern Ireland and roughly Primary 1 in Scotland, where start dates work a little differently.

Will my child be tested in Reception?

There is a short Reception Baseline Assessment in the first six weeks of the year. In the summer term, the teacher completes the EYFS Profile, a judgement of how your child is doing against the early learning goals. Neither needs any practice at home.

Are these Reception worksheets really free?

Yes. Every sheet is free to print or save as a PDF, with no sign-up and no email address needed. Print as many copies as you like for your family or your class.
