Number Bonds to 20 Worksheet: Free Year 2 Maths with Answers

This free, printable worksheet helps children practise number bonds to 20: pairs of numbers that add up to 20, such as 13 and 7. Children fill in the missing number in each sum, then use their bonds to take away from 20.

It prints on one A4 page, and the answers print on a second page for grown-ups.

Each pair of numbers makes 20. Write the missing number in the box.

    1. 1.11 + = 20
    2. 2.6 + = 20
    3. 3.20 + = 20
    4. 4.4 + = 20

    11. 11.17 + = 20
    12. 12.9 + = 20

    Which number comes first?

Write the number that goes with the other one to make 20.

    1. 1. + 3 = 20

    3. 3. + 11 = 20
    4. 4. + 16 = 20
    5. 5. + 13 = 20
    6. 6. + 7 = 20

    Take away from 20

Use your number bonds to answer these take-away sums.

    1. 1.20 − 17 =
    2. 2.20 − 4 =
    3. 3.20 − 0 =
    4. 4.20 − 8 =
    5. 5.20 − 16 =

What are number bonds to 20?

Number bonds are pairs of numbers that make a total. Number bonds to 20 are the pairs that add up to 20: 0 and 20, 1 and 19, 2 and 18, and so on up to 10 and 10. Children who know their number bonds to 10 can use them here. If 3 and 7 make 10, then 13 and 7 make 20.

    How to help at home

Start with the bonds your child already knows to 10 and show how each one grows to 20. Count out twenty small things, such as pasta pieces, and split them into two groups. Say each pair out loud: fourteen and six make twenty. Then try the sheet together, and check the answers on page 2.

    Why it matters

In Year 2, children are expected to recall addition and subtraction facts to 20 quickly and without counting. That quick recall makes later mental maths, column methods and money problems much easier.

    Frequently asked questions

What year group learns number bonds to 20?
