Free Year 1 geography worksheets (age 5-6)
Geography in the national curriculum is set for Key Stage 1 as a whole, so schools choose what to teach in Year 1 and what to leave for Year 2. Across the two years, children name the 7 continents and 5 oceans, learn the 4 countries of the UK and their capitals, and look at daily and seasonal weather. They also learn words for physical features, such as beach and hill, and human features, such as town and farm.
The sheets here, for children aged 5 to 6, cover all of those, along with simple compass directions and map keys, which may come in either year. Sheets on the seaside, transport and festivals suit children who are just moving on from Reception.
In Northern Ireland, Year 1 matches Primary 2, and in Scotland it is roughly Primary 2. Wales calls it Year 1.

Geography around your home
KS1 geography includes simple fieldwork around the school and its grounds, so the local area matters. Walk your street and name what you see: is that a hill or a house, a physical or a human feature? Which way is north? Check the weather each morning and pick a symbol to match. A globe or a world map on the wall helps continents and oceans stick.
Questions parents ask
What geography does Year 1 learn?
The national curriculum sets KS1 geography for Years 1 and 2 together, so schools decide the order. Topics often taught in Year 1 include the local area, the seasons and weather, and continents and oceans, but your child's school may differ.
How can I help my child learn the continents?
Sing or chant the names, then find each one on a globe or map. Link continents to things your child already knows, such as penguins in Antarctica, lions in Africa, or a holiday or a relative's home. The continents sheets give practice in naming and colouring.
Are these geography sheets free?
Yes. Every sheet on this page is free to print at home or in class. There is no account to create and no email to give.
