Year 2 is the last year of Key Stage 1, for children aged 6 to 7. Reading should become quicker and more automatic, and word classes get their proper names: noun, verb, adjective and adverb. Maths adds the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, money with £ and p, telling the time to five minutes, and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

The sheets here cover those areas, along with suffixes, plurals and homophones such as there, their and they're. In science, Year 2 looks at living things and habitats, how seeds grow, what animals need to survive and the uses of everyday materials. There are also maps of the UK and the world, and KS1 history topics such as the Great Fire of London.

Children of this age are in Primary 3 in Northern Ireland and roughly Primary 3 in Scotland. In Wales the name stays Year 2.

    Tests in Year 2

Since 2023/24 the Key Stage 1 tests, often called Year 2 SATs, have been optional. Some schools still use the papers in May to see how children are getting on, and others do not, so ask your child's teacher what your school does. Children who did not meet the standard in the Year 1 phonics screening check take it again in June of Year 2.

    Using these sheets at home

Many Year 2 children can read the instructions themselves, so let them try first and then talk through the answers together. Ask them to explain their thinking aloud, using the new grammar words where they can. Real objects make maths easier: count out coins from your purse for the money sheets and use the kitchen clock for time. Keep sessions short and stop on a success.

    Questions parents ask

    What age is Year 2?

Year 2 is for children aged 6 to 7. It is the final year of Key Stage 1, before children move up to Key Stage 2 in Year 3. In Northern Ireland the matching year is Primary 3.

    Are the answers included?

Most sheets show an answer key on the page, and it prints on its own page so you can keep it to one side. A few tracing, colouring and drawing sheets have no fixed answers.

Do I need to sign up to print them?

No. There is no account, email or payment. Open a sheet and choose Print, or save it as a PDF to print later. Each one is set up for ordinary A4 paper.
