Year 5 is the start of upper Key Stage 2, for children aged 9 to 10. Maths moves on to factors, multiples and prime numbers, long multiplication, percentages, the area of rectangles and the perimeter of composite shapes. In science, children study Earth and space, forces including gravity and friction, the life cycles of different animals, how plants and animals reproduce, and how materials change.

The sheets here lean towards Year 5 science, with the planets, day and night, the Moon and friction, plus a frog life cycle and the parts of a flower. There are also maths sheets on perimeter, area, decimals and coordinates, map and Europe sheets for geography, and a history sheet on Victorian children. More sheets are added regularly.

In Northern Ireland this is Primary 6, and in Scotland it is roughly Primary 6. Wales uses the name Year 5.

    What changes in Year 5?

Work becomes more abstract this year. In maths, children are asked to explain their reasoning, not just find answers. In science, they plan their own enquiries and learn to control variables to make a test fair. In writing, they think about who they are writing for and why. There are no national tests in Year 5, which makes it a good year to fill any gaps calmly before Year 6.

    Try it at home

Earth and space is easy to model with a torch and a ball. In a dark room, shine the torch at the ball and turn it slowly: one side has day while the other has night. Look at the Moon on clear evenings for a month and draw its shape each time. For friction, slide a shoe across different floors and feel which surface grips best.

    Questions parents ask

    What age is Year 5?

Can teachers use these sheets too?

Yes. Teachers, tutors and home educators can print them for free, with no account or email needed. They work as lesson starters, homework or a quick check at the end of a topic.
