Year 4 children are 8 to 9, in the second year of Key Stage 2. The big maths goal is to recall every times table up to 12 × 12. Children also round numbers, work with tenths and hundredths as decimals, find area by counting squares, plot coordinates and name acute and obtuse angles. In English they learn to use apostrophes for plural possession and to punctuate speech fully.

Science this year covers teeth and the digestive system, food chains, solids, liquids and gases, the water cycle, sound and simple electrical circuits. The page also has sheets on the Romans, Europe, rivers, volcanoes and map symbols, plus some Year 3 sheets that are useful for practice.

In Northern Ireland this year group is Primary 5, and in Scotland it is roughly Primary 5. In Wales it is Year 4, as in England.

    Tests in Year 4

In June, Year 4 children in England take the multiplication tables check. It is done on a screen and takes about five minutes: 25 questions on tables up to 12 × 12, with 6 seconds to answer each one. There is no pass mark. The times table sheets here make useful practice, and a few minutes of recall each day helps more than a long session the night before.

    Working on their own

Most Year 4 children can manage a sheet without help. A good routine is to do the sheet, check it with the answer key, then talk about one thing that went wrong. Science sheets such as the circuit or the digestive system pair well with something real: a torch with its battery and switch, or a look at teeth in the mirror. Praise careful checking as much as right answers.

    Questions parents ask

    What age is Year 4?

Year 4 is for children aged 8 to 9. Most are 8 when the year begins in September. It is the second year of Key Stage 2 and the year of the multiplication tables check.

What times tables should my Year 4 child know?

By the end of Year 4, the national curriculum expects children to recall multiplication and division facts for all tables up to 12 × 12. Year 2 covers the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and Year 3 the 3, 4 and 8, so Year 4 adds the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12.

Do these sheets follow the curriculum in Wales?

They are written for the National Curriculum in England. Wales uses the same year names but follows the Curriculum for Wales, which does not set topics year by year. The sheets still work well for practice; just check with your child's school what they are covering.
