Patterns in the 3s count
Counting in 3s from 0 lands on 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and so on. Colour these numbers on a hundred square and they make diagonal lines across the grid. The numbers also take turns at being odd and even: 3 is odd, 6 is even, 9 is odd, 12 is even.
How to help at home
Jump along a number line or a hopscotch path in 3s, saying each number as you land. Or count out loud together, whispering the in-between numbers and saying every third one loudly: one, two, THREE, four, five, SIX. When counting forwards feels easy, start at 30 and count back in 3s to 0.
Why it matters
Counting in 3s in Year 2 prepares children for the 3 times table in Year 3. It also supports their first work on thirds, because sharing into 3 equal groups uses the same idea.
Frequently asked questions
When do children learn to count in 3s?
Counting in 3s is part of Year 2, when children are 6 to 7. The National Curriculum in England asks them to count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0, forwards and backwards.
Why do the tracks start at different numbers?
So that children practise from the middle of the count, not only from 0. Every track starts on a multiple of 3, so all the numbers are in the 3s count.
Is this worksheet really free?
Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
