Answer key
- Clock 1: 9 o'clock

- Clock 4: quarter to 2
- Clock 5: quarter past 11
- Clock 6: quarter to 8
Quarter past and quarter to
When the minute hand points to the 3, it has gone a quarter of the way round: quarter past. When it points to the 9, there is a quarter of the way still to go: quarter to the next hour. The hour hand sits between two numbers, which is why quarter to 4 has the hour hand nearly at the 4.
How to help at home
Use a real clock with hands, or make one from a paper plate. Talk about times in your day: we leave for school at quarter past 8. Ask your child to say where the minute hand will be before you look.
What comes next
Year 2 children go on to tell the time to five minutes. Once quarter past and quarter to feel easy, try 5 past and 10 past, counting in fives around the clock.
Frequently asked questions
When do children learn quarter past and quarter to?
In Year 2, when children are 6 to 7. They tell the time to the hour and half past in Year 1 first.
Why is the hour hand not on the number?
The hour hand moves slowly all hour. At quarter to 4 it is three quarters of the way from 3 to 4, so it is nearly at the 4. Looking closely at this helps children read clocks correctly.
Is this worksheet really free?
