Patterns in the 5 times table

    Every answer in the 5 times table ends in 5 or 0. Odd numbers times 5 end in 5, such as 7 × 5 = 35. Even numbers times 5 end in 0, such as 8 × 5 = 40. There is a neat shortcut too: 5 lots of a number is half of 10 lots. 10 × 6 is 60, so 5 × 6 is half of 60, which is 30.

    How to help at home

Count in 5s with a line of 5p coins, or with one hand of five fingers at a time. A clock face helps as well. The minute hand moves 5 minutes from one number to the next, so counting round in 5s tells you how many minutes past the hour it is.

    Why it matters

The 5 times table leads straight into telling the time to five minutes, which is also part of Year 2. It helps with money, because 5p coins are counted in fives. Later, it lets children work out facts such as 50 × 6 from 5 × 6.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 5 times table?

The National Curriculum in England puts the 5 times table in Year 2, when children are 6 to 7. Counting in 5s starts a year before, in Year 1.

Why does every answer end in 5 or 0?

Two 5s make 10. So an even number of 5s always makes a whole number of tens, ending in 0. An odd number of 5s leaves one 5 over, so the answer ends in 5.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
