Telling the Time to 5 Minutes Worksheet: Free Year 2 Maths with Answers
This free, printable worksheet helps children tell the time to five minutes. They read the time on six clocks, then draw the hands on three blank clocks. Most of the times are new ones, like 10 past and 25 to, rather than quarter past or half past.
It prints on one A4 page, and the answers print on a second page for grown-ups.

Counting round in fives
Each number on the clock face is 5 minutes for the minute hand. When it points to the 1, it is 5 past; at the 2, 10 past; at the 4, 20 past. After the 6, we count the minutes left until the next hour instead: at the 8 it is 20 to, and at the 11 it is 5 to.
How to help at home
Point at the minute hand on a real clock and count round in fives together. Ask your child to tell you the time at moments in the day, such as when dinner goes in the oven or when you leave for the park. If you have a digital clock too, compare them: 4:20 is 20 past 4, and 4:40 is 20 to 5.
What comes next
In Year 3, children read the time to the nearest minute, use clock faces with Roman numerals, and start to use 12-hour and 24-hour clocks. Counting round in fives is what lets them find a time like 23 minutes past: 20 past, then 3 more.
Frequently asked questions
When do children learn to tell the time to five minutes?
In Year 2, when children are 6 to 7. They learn o'clock and half past in Year 1, then quarter past, quarter to and five-minute times in Year 2.
Where should the hour hand point at 25 to 7?
Between the 6 and the 7, closer to the 7. The hour hand moves slowly all hour, so at 25 to 7 it has gone more than halfway. For 'to' times, the hour you say is the one the hand is moving towards.
