How the 2 times table works

Multiplying by 2 is the same as doubling. 6 × 2 is double 6, which is 12. Every answer in the 2 times table is an even number, so it ends in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. If your child writes an answer that ends in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, they know straight away to look again.

    How to help at home

Pairs are everywhere at home. Count socks, shoes or gloves in twos as you sort the washing: 2, 4, 6, 8. Then turn it round: we have 14 socks, so how many pairs is that? That question is dividing by 2, and it is the same as halving.

    What comes next

The 2 times table is the first step in a doubling chain. In Year 3, children learn the 4 times table, which is double the 2s, and the 8 times table, which is double the 4s. A child who is quick with the 2s has a head start on both.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 2 times table?

In Year 2, when children are 6 to 7, alongside the 5 and 10 times tables. Children count in 2s a year earlier, in Year 1, so the facts often feel familiar.

What is the link between the 2 times table and odd and even numbers?

Every answer in the 2 times table is even. The Year 2 curriculum puts the two together: knowing the 2s helps children spot even numbers, and the numbers in between are odd.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
