Patterns in the 9 times table

The 9 times table is full of patterns. From 1 × 9 to 10 × 9, the tens digit goes up by one each time and the ones digit goes down by one: 9, 18, 27, 36. For every answer up to 10 × 9, the digits add up to 9: for 63, 6 plus 3 is 9. You can also find 9 lots by taking 1 lot away from 10 lots. 9 × 7 is 70 take away 7, which is 63.

How to help at home: the finger trick

Hold up all ten fingers. To work out 4 × 9, fold down the fourth finger from the left. There are 3 fingers to the left of it and 6 to the right, so the answer is 36. It works for every fact from 1 × 9 to 10 × 9, and it gives your child a way to check an answer on their own.

    Why it matters

Taking 1 lot away from 10 lots is a strategy children use again and again. Later it helps with sums such as 99 × 4, which is 400 take away 4. The digit pattern also gives a quick way to check whether a number is in the 9 times table.

    Frequently asked questions

When is the 9 times table taught?

In Year 4 of the National Curriculum in England, when children are 8 to 9. Children also count in multiples of 9 that year, which helps.

    Does the finger trick work for 11 × 9 and 12 × 9?

No, you run out of fingers. For those, use 10 lots take away 1 lot: 11 × 9 is 110 take away 11, which is 99, and 12 × 9 is 120 take away 12, which is 108.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
