    Multiplication and division go together

    Every multiplication fact gives two division facts. From 8 × 7 = 56, we also know that 56 ÷ 7 = 8 and 56 ÷ 8 = 7. When a division question feels hard, ask the multiplication question instead: what times 7 makes 56?

    How to help at home

Make a set of cards with a times table fact on the front and the answer on the back. Shuffle them and go through a handful each day. Put the facts your child answers quickly in one pile, and keep practising the others. A few minutes a day works better than one long session a week.

    Why mixed practice matters

Learning one table at a time is a good start, but children often count up the table to find an answer. Mixed questions check that each fact is known on its own. That matters in Year 4, when children use their tables inside bigger calculations, such as 6 × 34 or 420 ÷ 7.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn all the times tables to 12?

By the end of Year 4. The National Curriculum in England builds them up in stages: the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2, the 3, 4 and 8 times tables in Year 3, and the rest in Year 4.

My child knows the tables in order but not mixed up. Is that normal?

Yes. Saying a table in order is often the first stage. Mixed practice helps each fact stand on its own, so your child can answer 7 × 8 without starting from 1 × 8.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
