How the 3 times table works

The 3 times table is counting in threes: 3, 6, 9, 12 and so on. Children often spot a useful pattern: add the digits of any answer and you always get 3, 6 or 9. For 27, 2 plus 7 is 9. It is a quick way to check an answer.

    How to help at home

Count in threes out loud on the way to school, up and back down. Use small groups of three objects to show that 4 lots of 3 is the same as 3 lots of 4. When a fact is shaky, link it to one your child knows: if 5 × 3 is 15, then 6 × 3 is 3 more.

Times tables in Year 3 and Year 4

In Year 3, children learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, building on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables from Year 2. In Year 4 they learn all the tables up to 12 × 12, and take the multiplication tables check in June.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 3 times table?

The National Curriculum in England puts the 3 times table in Year 3, alongside the 4 and 8 times tables, when children are 7 to 8.

Why are the questions in a mixed order?

Mixed order checks that your child really knows each fact, rather than counting up the table from the start every time.

    Is this worksheet really free?
