Telling the Time to the Minute Worksheet: Free Year 3 Maths with Answers

This free, printable worksheet helps children tell the time to the minute on an analogue clock. They read six clocks with times such as 23 minutes past or 17 minutes to the hour, then draw the hands on three blank clocks.

It prints on one A4 page, and the answers print on a second page for grown-ups.

Telling the Time to the Minute

Free Maths worksheet · Ages 7 to 8

    Name:
A cartoon sloth hanging from a branch and holding a pocket watch, drawn as black outlines on white for colouring in.

    What time is it?

Write the time under each clock, to the nearest minute.

    Draw the hands

Draw the hour hand and the minute hand to show each time.

    1. 11 minutes to 9
    2. 16 minutes past 9
    3. 6 minutes past 7
    Answer key
    • Clock 1: 23 minutes past 3
    • Clock 2: 24 minutes past 12
    • Clock 3: 16 minutes to 7
    • Clock 4: 12 minutes to 12
    • Clock 5: 22 minutes to 6
    • Clock 6: 11 minutes past 10

    Reading the minutes

Count in fives to the last number the minute hand has passed, then count on in ones using the small marks. If the minute hand is 3 marks past the 4, that is 20 and 3 more: 23 minutes past. After half past, count the minutes left until the next hour instead. 3 marks before the 9 is 15 and 3 more, so it is 18 minutes to.

    How to help at home

Ask for the exact time now and then, not just 'about 4 o'clock'. A watch with hands is ideal. If your child also has a digital clock, compare the two: 4:42 on a digital clock is 18 minutes to 5 on an analogue one.

    What comes next

Year 3 also brings Roman numerals on clock faces, a.m. and p.m., and 24-hour times. In Year 4, children convert between analogue and digital 12- and 24-hour clocks, so reading an analogue clock quickly and exactly is a skill they keep using.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn to tell the time to the minute?

In Year 3, when children are 7 to 8. Year 2 covers times to five minutes, and Year 3 moves on to the nearest minute.

How do you say a time like 7:38?

On an analogue clock, 7:38 is 22 minutes to 8, because there are 22 minutes left until 8 o'clock. Some children find it easier to say 38 minutes past 7 at first. Both are right, but 'to' is the usual way for times after half past.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
