    Why the 7s feel hard

The 7 times table has fewer handy patterns than the 2s, 5s or 10s, so children often learn it last. The good news is that most of it is known already. 7 × 3 is the same as 3 × 7, and 7 × 8 is the same as 8 × 7. Once your child knows all the other tables, the only new fact in the 7s is 7 × 7 = 49.

    How to help at home

There are 7 days in a week, so a calendar makes good practice. Look down one column of a monthly calendar: the dates go up in 7s. Ask how many days there are in 3 weeks, or in 5 weeks. To build a fact, split the 7 into 5 and 2: 7 × 6 is 5 × 6 plus 2 × 6, which is 30 plus 12, so 42.

    What comes next

Once the 7s are secure, children use them in bigger calculations, such as 7 × 30 = 210, or 7 × 23 with a written method. Quick recall of the 7s makes those calculations much faster.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 7 times table?

In Year 4, when children are 8 to 9. The National Curriculum in England expects children to know every table up to 12 × 12 by the end of that year.

    Is there a trick for 7 × 8?

Say the numbers 5, 6, 7, 8 in order: 56 = 7 × 8. Many children find this fact hard to remember, so a memory hook helps.

    Is this worksheet really free?
