    Double, then double again

The 4 times table is double the 2 times table. To work out 7 × 4, double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. Children who know their 2s can use this to find any 4s fact they have forgotten. It works for dividing too: halve, then halve again. For 36 ÷ 4, half of 36 is 18 and half of 18 is 9.

    How to help at home

Look for fours around you: legs on a chair, wheels on a car, paws on a dog. How many legs are there on 6 chairs? Count them in fours together. A pack of cards helps as well. Deal some cards into 4 equal piles and ask how many cards there are in all.

    Times tables in Year 3

Year 3 children learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. The 4s sit in the middle of the doubling chain that runs from the 2s to the 8s, so learning them well makes the 8 times table much easier.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 4 times table?

Year 3, when children are 7 to 8. It sits between the 2s, learned in Year 2, and the 8s, which are also learned in Year 3.

Are all the answers in the 4 times table even?

Yes. Every answer is double a 2s answer, so every answer is even. The ones digits follow a pattern too: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, and then it repeats.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
