    How column addition works

Write the numbers one above the other so the ones, tens and hundreds line up. Add the ones column first, then the tens, then the hundreds. Starting on the right matters, because of exchanging.

    What is exchanging?

When the ones add up to 10 or more, ten ones are exchanged for one ten. Children write the tens digit as a small number under the tens column and add it in. Many parents learned this as carrying; schools now usually call it exchanging.

    How to help at home

Before your child starts, ask them to estimate. 368 plus 457 is about 400 plus 500, so the answer should be near 900. Afterwards, check an answer by taking one number away from it. These habits catch most slips.
