What is the multiplication tables check?

It is a short online check that children in England take in June of Year 4. There are 25 questions, each a times table fact up to 12 × 12, and children have 6 seconds to answer each one. Before the real questions start, they try 3 practice questions. There is no pass mark.

    How to use this sheet

Start without a timer, so your child can show what they know. Mark the sheet together and note which facts went wrong. Then try it again another day. 25 questions at 6 seconds each comes to 2 minutes 30 seconds. On paper, answers take a little longer to write, so aim for steady progress rather than an exact time.

    Which tables to practise most

This sheet gives extra practice to the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables, because children often find these harder. If a few facts keep catching your child out, practise just those, and reach each one from a fact they already know: 6 × 8 is double 6 × 4, which is double 24, so 48.

    Frequently asked questions

When is the multiplication tables check?

Children take it in June of Year 4, when they are 8 or 9. Schools run it, so there is nothing for parents to book or sign up to.

Is this an official practice paper?

No. It is our own practice sheet, set out in a similar way: 3 practice questions, then 25 times table facts up to 12 × 12. The real check is taken online, with 6 seconds for each question.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
