    • 7 × 11 = 77

The 11s pattern, and where it stops

    From 1 × 11 to 9 × 11, the answer is the digit written twice: 3 × 11 = 33 and 7 × 11 = 77. That is because 11 lots of a number is 10 lots plus 1 lot, and 30 plus 3 makes 33. The pattern breaks at 10 × 11 = 110, because 10 has two digits. For the same reason, 11 × 11 is 110 plus 11, which is 121, and 12 × 11 is 120 plus 12, which is 132.

    How to help at home

    Make it a game of spot the pattern. Write 1 × 11 to 9 × 11 down a page together, then cover the answers and ask for them out of order: 6 × 11, 3 × 11, 8 × 11. Finish with the three harder facts, 10 × 11, 11 × 11 and 12 × 11, building each one out loud as 10 lots plus 1 lot.

    What comes next

Thinking of 11 lots as 10 lots plus 1 lot is the same idea children use to multiply bigger numbers in Year 4, such as 23 × 4 = 20 × 4 + 3 × 4. A child who understands why the 11s work, not just the pattern, is ready for that step.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 11 times table?

The 11 times table is taught in Year 4, when children are 8 to 9, along with the 6, 7, 9 and 12 times tables.

    Is there a trick for 12 × 11?

Add the two digits of 12 and put the total in the middle: 1, then 1 + 2 = 3, then 2, which gives 132. It works for 11 × 11 as well: 1, then 2, then 1 gives 121. Check it by working out 120 + 12.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
