Patterns in the 6 times table

The 6 times table is double the 3 times table. 7 × 3 is 21, so 7 × 6 is 42. There is also a pattern with even numbers. When you multiply 6 by 2, 4, 6 or 8, the answer ends in that same digit, and the tens digit is half of it: 6 × 4 = 24 and 6 × 8 = 48.

    How to help at home

Egg boxes that hold six are perfect for the 6s. Ask how many eggs fit in 3 boxes, then 4. Build each new fact from one your child knows: 5 × 6 is 30, so 6 × 6 is 30 plus one more 6, which is 36.

    Times tables in Year 4

By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all their times tables up to 12 × 12. The 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables are the new ones that year, and they are all part of the multiplication tables check in June.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn the 6 times table?

The 6 times table belongs to Year 4, when children are 8 to 9. They learn the 3 times table in Year 3, and the 6s are double the 3s, so they are not starting from scratch.

    Is 6 × 7 the same as 7 × 6?

Yes. Multiplication can be done in either order, so 6 × 7 and 7 × 6 are both 42. Knowing this nearly halves the number of facts your child has to learn.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
