    Thousands, hundreds, tens and ones

In 4,327, the 4 is worth 4,000, the 3 is worth 300, the 2 is worth 20 and the 7 is worth 7. A zero holds a place: in 4,027 there are no hundreds, but the 0 keeps the 4 in the thousands place. Without it, the number would be 427.

    How to help at home

Look for 4-digit numbers around you, such as the year, a price for a bike or a holiday, or the number of pages in a long book. Ask what each digit is worth. Then ask for 1,000 more and 1,000 less, and check that only the thousands digit has changed.

    Why it matters

Year 4 children use 4-digit place value in column addition and subtraction, in rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000, and in ordering and comparing numbers beyond 1,000. In Year 5 they go on to numbers up to 1,000,000.

    Frequently asked questions

When do children learn place value with thousands?

Place value with thousands comes in Year 4, when children are 8 to 9. Year 3 covers numbers to 1,000, and Year 4 moves on to 4-digit numbers.

Why can 1,000 less give a 2-digit number?

Because there are no thousands left. 1,042 take away 1,000 is 42. Children sometimes write 042 or 0,042, but the zeros at the front are not needed.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
