The rounding rule
Look at the digit just to the right of the place you are rounding to. To round to the nearest 10, look at the ones: 0 to 4 rounds down, and 5 to 9 rounds up. So 43 rounds to 40 and 45 rounds to 50. To round to the nearest 100, look at the tens: 349 rounds to 300, and 350 rounds to 400.
How to help at home
Draw a number line from 300 to 400 and mark 350 in the middle. Ask where 372 goes, and which end it is closer to. Then use rounding in everyday life: a 68-mile journey is about 70 miles, and £3.75 is about £4.
Why it matters
Rounding is how children estimate. Before a calculation such as 486 + 312, they can round to 500 + 300 and expect an answer near 800. The Year 4 curriculum also asks for rounding to the nearest 1,000, which uses the same rule with the hundreds digit.
Frequently asked questions
When do children learn rounding?
Rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000 is part of Year 4 maths in the National Curriculum in England, when children are 8 to 9. In Year 5 they round numbers up to 1,000,000.
Does 5 round up or down?
Up. A number ending in 5, such as 65, is exactly halfway between 60 and 70, and the rule is to round up, so 65 rounds to 70. In the same way, 250 rounds to 300 to the nearest 100.
Is this worksheet really free?
Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
