Ways to work out the 12s

    Split 12 into 10 and 2. 12 × 7 is 10 × 7 plus 2 × 7, which is 70 plus 14, so 84. The 12s are also double the 6s: if 6 × 8 is 48, then 12 × 8 is 96. Every answer in the 12 times table is even, which is a useful check.

    How to help at home

Twelve turns up a lot at home. Some egg boxes hold 12 eggs, there are 12 months in a year, and a clock face has 12 numbers. Ask how many months there are in 3 years, or how many eggs fit in 4 boxes of 12. For a quick check, use the 10s and 2s: 4 × 12 is 40 plus 8.

    The biggest fact to learn

The 12 times table includes the largest fact children need to know in primary school: 12 × 12 = 144. With the 12s in place, a child has every fact up to 12 × 12, which is the range the multiplication tables check covers in June of Year 4.

    Frequently asked questions

When is the 12 times table taught?

It is taught in Year 4, at age 8 to 9. It completes the set of tables up to 12 × 12 that the National Curriculum in England expects by the end of Year 4.

What are the factor pairs of 12?

    1 × 12, 2 × 6 and 3 × 4. Knowing them helps with the 12s: 12 × 5 is the same as 2 × 6 × 5, which is 2 × 30, so 60.

    Is this worksheet really free?

Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
