How to find a fraction of an amount
Divide by the bottom number, then multiply by the top number. To find three quarters of 8, share 8 into 4 equal groups of 2, then take 3 of those groups: 6. For a unit fraction like a quarter, the top number is 1, so dividing is all you need.
Use real objects first
Sharing sweets, buttons or grapes into equal groups makes fractions concrete. Ask: if we share these 15 grapes between 3 bowls, how many are in one bowl? That is one third of 15. How many are in two bowls?
Why it matters
Fractions of amounts link times tables, division and fractions together. Children who can do this confidently find percentages and ratio much easier in Years 5 and 6.
