Lining up the columns
With 4-digit numbers there are four columns: thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Many mistakes come from digits that are not lined up, so encourage your child to write one digit to a square if they use squared paper. Then add from the ones on the right to the thousands on the left.
Exchanging more than once
In 4-digit sums, exchanging can happen in any column. If the ones make 13, write 3 and exchange ten ones for one ten. If the tens then make 11, write 1 and exchange ten tens for one hundred. Each exchanged digit is written small under the next column and added in.
How to help at home
Ask your child to round both numbers to the nearest 1,000 before they start. 3,684 + 2,457 is about 4,000 + 2,000, so the answer should be near 6,000. If the answer is far from the estimate, look again. The exact answer here is 6,141.
