Year 5 and 6 spelling list: all 100 statutory words
Children in Years 5 and 6 learn to spell another 100 set words, from ‘accommodate’ to ‘yacht’. This list is statutory too, and it includes some of the most commonly misspelt words in English, such as ‘necessary’, ‘separate’ and ‘rhythm’.
The spelling paper in the Year 6 tests checks spelling from across Key Stage 2, so these words are worth knowing well. Print the list, tick the words your child can spell, and practise the rest a few at a time.
Prints on two A4 pages: the full list, then a practice page.

Is this list statutory?
‘The word-lists for years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6 are statutory.’ English Appendix 1, National Curriculum in England.
How to practise at home
Spot the tricky part of each word: the double c and double m in ‘accommodate’, the silent letters in ‘rhyme’ and ‘rhythm’. Word families help too: the spelling appendix points out that ‘conscience’ is simply ‘science’ with ‘con-’ added. Use the practice page for look, say, cover, write and check.
Words in brackets
Some entries show related forms, such as ‘immediate(ly)’ or ‘equip (–ped, –ment)’. Children learn the root word and the longer forms. Many words on the list are also useful practice for adding suffixes.
