Free Reception geography worksheets (age 4-5)
Reception has no separate geography curriculum. Early geography sits inside Understanding the World, one of the seven areas of the EYFS framework. By the end of the year, children aged 4 to 5 are expected to describe their immediate environment, talk about some differences between life in this country and life in other countries, and understand changes in the natural world, including the seasons.
These sheets start from things young children see and talk about: weather symbols, a day at the seaside, travel by land, air and water, and the Union flag. Two sheets look at celebrations, with festivals around the world and the animals of Lunar New Year, which link to the goal about different cultures and communities.
In Northern Ireland this age group is in Primary 1, and in Scotland roughly Primary 1. Wales uses the name Reception as well.

Festivals and celebrations
Children find out how families and communities celebrate special times such as Diwali, Lunar New Year and Christmas, and notice similarities and differences.
Seaside and coasts
Children learn words for coastal features such as beach, cliff and coast, and compare seaside places.
The UK
Children learn the four countries of the United Kingdom and their capital cities, and later its counties, cities and regions.
Transport
Children sort and talk about ways of travelling on land, in the air and on water.
Weather
Children observe daily and seasonal weather in the UK and learn the symbols and words used to describe it.
Geography on your doorstep
Young children learn geography best from what is around them. Look out of the window each morning and match the weather to a symbol. Spot buses, boats and planes on a walk, or sort holiday photos into land and sea. Drawing a simple map of your home or street together is a first step towards reading maps, which the early learning goals mention by name.
Questions parents ask
Is geography taught in Reception?
Not as a separate subject. It is part of Understanding the World in the EYFS framework, which includes describing the local area, comparing life here with other countries, and noticing the seasons and weather. Geography as a national curriculum subject starts in Year 1.
Why are festivals on a geography page?
Festivals help young children learn that people around the world, and in their own community, live and celebrate in different ways. The EYFS goal on people, culture and communities asks children to know some of these similarities and differences.
Do I need to register to print?
