    Reception–Year 3Ages 4–87 worksheetsFree to print, no sign-up

Counting is where maths begins. By the end of Reception, children are expected to count beyond 20, recognise up to 5 objects without counting, and compare groups to see which has more. In Year 1, the national curriculum asks them to count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, and to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

These sheets, for ages 4 to 7, practise counting pictures of minibeasts, sea creatures and ladybird spots up to 20, pairs of wellies for counting in 2s, and number tracks for counting in 5s and 10s. Each one mixes counting with colouring, which helps children keep track, and the wellies sheet adds a counting-in-2s sequence to complete.

Children learn to count objects one by one, read and write numbers, and count in steps such as 2s, 5s and 10s. Confident counting is the base for adding, subtracting and the times tables.

    Counting tips for home

Touch or move each object as you count, so every item gets exactly one number. Say the last number again to show it is the total. Count forwards and backwards, and start from numbers other than 1. Counting in 2s is easiest with things that come in pairs, such as socks, shoes, gloves and eyes. Then try 5s with fingers and 10s with both hands.

    Questions parents ask

    What is subitising?

Subitising means seeing how many there are without counting, like knowing a dice shows 5 at a glance. The Reception goal is to subitise up to 5. Dot patterns, dice and fingers are good ways to practise.

When should my child count to 100?

Counting to and across 100 is a Year 1 skill in the national curriculum, for ages 5 to 6. In Reception the goal is to count beyond 20. Every child gets there at their own pace.

    Are these counting sheets free?

Yes. All four are free to print with no sign-up or email. Slip a copy into a plastic sleeve and use a dry-wipe pen, and you can use it again and again.
