Free fractions worksheets
Fractions start with sharing. In Year 1, children find half and a quarter of a shape or a group of objects. In Year 2 they add thirds and three quarters, and in Year 3 they find fractions of amounts, such as two thirds of 12, and spot equivalent fractions, such as four eighths and one half.
These sheets move through those steps, with pictures to share out and an answer page for grown-ups.
Children begin with halves and quarters of shapes and amounts, then learn thirds, eighths and equivalent fractions, and later add, subtract and multiply fractions.
Fractions in the kitchen
Cutting a pizza, sharing biscuits or folding paper all show fractions. Ask: if we share 12 grapes between 4 people, how many is a quarter? How many is three quarters? Saying the fraction out loud while sharing links the words to the amounts.
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between a fraction of a shape and a fraction of an amount?
A fraction of a shape splits one thing into equal parts, like half a pizza. A fraction of an amount shares a group into equal groups, like half of 10 sweets. Children need practice with both.
Why must the parts be equal?
A fraction only works when every part is the same size. Cutting a cake into two uneven pieces does not make halves. It is one of the first things children learn about fractions.
Are these worksheets free?
Yes. Every sheet is free to print, with no sign-up or email, and the answers print on their own page.
