How the counts connect
The 8s count is the 4s count with every other number left out: 8, 16 and 24 are all in the 4s count too. In the same way, the 100s count is the 50s count with every other number left out. Counting in 50s goes 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, so the numbers end in 50 and 00 in turn.
How to help at home
Count 50p coins in 50s, and talk about how two 50p coins make £1. For 4s, count the legs on chairs around the table. For 8s, count the legs on spiders in a picture book. Then try each count backwards, starting from 48 or from 1,000.
Why it matters
These counts sit behind the 4 and 8 times tables, which Year 3 children learn at the same time. Counting in 50s and 100s builds place value with 3-digit numbers, and it helps with money, measuring and reading scales.
Frequently asked questions
When do children learn to count in 4s, 8s, 50s and 100s?
All four are in Year 3 of the National Curriculum in England, when children are 7 to 8. Counting in 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s comes first, in Years 1 and 2.
Why does the 100s track count backwards?
Counting back is harder than counting on, and children need both. Going down from 1,000 also practises the step from a 4-digit number to a 3-digit one.
Is this worksheet really free?
Yes. Print it, save it as a PDF or share it with other parents and teachers. There is no sign-up and no email needed.
