Free addition and subtraction worksheets
Children build addition and subtraction step by step. In Year 1 they learn number bonds within 20 and add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20. In Year 2 they recall facts to 20 quickly and work with numbers up to 100. In Year 3 they add and subtract numbers with up to 3 digits, using the column method.
These sheets follow that path, from number bonds to 10 and 20 through to column addition with exchanging. Each one has an answer page for grown-ups.
Children start by combining and taking away small groups, learn number bonds to 10 and 20, then move on to mental methods and written column methods with bigger numbers.

Quick recall of number bonds makes everything else easier. A child who knows that 7 and 3 make 10 can work out 17 and 3, 70 and 30, and later 700 and 300 without counting. If a sheet feels hard, step back to the bonds and build up again.
Questions parents ask
When do children learn column addition?
The formal column method is part of Year 3 in the national curriculum, for numbers with up to 3 digits. Year 4 moves on to 4-digit numbers.
Is carrying the same as exchanging?
Yes. Schools usually say exchanging, because ten ones are swapped for one ten. It is the same method many parents learned as carrying.
Are these worksheets free?
Yes. Every sheet is free to print, with no sign-up or email. Print a fresh copy whenever your child wants another go.
