    Free telling the time worksheets

Years 1–4Ages 5–94 worksheetsFree to print, no sign-up

Children learn to tell the time in steps. In Year 1 they read o'clock and half past. In Year 2 they move on to quarter past and quarter to, and then to five minutes. In Year 3 they tell the time to the nearest minute, including on clocks with Roman numerals.

Most sheets here have clocks to read and clocks to draw the hands on. The clocks are drawn exactly, so the hands always match the answers.

Children learn to read o'clock and half past in Year 1, then quarter past, quarter to and five-minute times, and later the 12-hour and 24-hour clock.

    Help at home

A real clock with hands helps most. Say the time at points in the day: we eat lunch at half past twelve. Before you look, ask your child where the minute hand will be. Digital clocks are fine too, but an analogue clock shows how the hours move round.

    Questions parents ask

When should my child be able to tell the time?

In England, children read o'clock and half past in Year 1, quarter past, quarter to and five minutes in Year 2, and the time to the minute in Year 3. Many children need extra practice at home, so little and often works well.

Why is the hour hand between two numbers?

The hour hand moves slowly all through the hour. At half past three it is halfway between the 3 and the 4. Children who notice this read clocks much more accurately.

    Are these worksheets free?

Yes. Every sheet is free to print, with no sign-up or email, and the answers print on their own page.
