Place value means knowing what each digit in a number is worth: in 352, the 3 is worth 300, the 5 is worth 50 and the 2 is worth 2. Children meet tens and ones in Year 2, hundreds in Year 3 and thousands in Year 4, when they also round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.

These sheets follow that order, from splitting 2-digit numbers into tens and ones through to rounding, with an answer page for grown-ups.

Children learn what each digit in a number is worth, from tens and ones in Year 2 to thousands in Year 4 and millions by Year 6. It helps them compare, order and calculate with numbers.

    Make it hands-on

Bundles of ten straws, or 1p, 10p and £1 coins, make place value real. Build a number, then swap ten ones for a ten. A place value chart with columns for hundreds, tens and ones helps children line up digits before they start column addition.

    Questions parents ask

Why does place value matter so much?

Almost all arithmetic depends on it: adding in columns, exchanging, multiplying by 10 and 100, and decimals later on. A child who is unsure what each digit is worth will find column methods confusing.

    What does partitioning mean?

Splitting a number into the parts each digit is worth: 47 is 40 and 7, and 352 is 300, 50 and 2. It is the first step in many mental and written methods.

    Are these worksheets free?

Yes. Every sheet is free to print, with no sign-up or email, and the answers print on their own page.
