Free animal worksheets (KS1)
Animals are a big part of KS1 science. In Year 1, children name common fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, compare how they are built, and sort animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. In Year 2, they learn that animals, including humans, need water, food and air to survive, and that most living things live in habitats that suit them.
These six sheets, for ages 5 to 7, cover animal groups, what animals eat, survival needs, the parts of a bee and the animals of the frozen poles. A spotting sheet for four common British garden birds, the robin, blue tit, blackbird and sparrow, takes the learning outside.
Children name common animals and sort them into groups such as fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, and find out what animals eat and need to survive.

Animals and Their Survival Needs

Animals come back throughout primary science. After KS1, Year 3 looks at nutrition and skeletons, Year 4 at teeth, digestion and food chains, Year 5 at life cycles, and Year 6 at classification, the heart and how animals are adapted to where they live. The KS1 sheets here lay the groundwork: knowing the main animal groups and what animals need makes every later topic easier.
Questions parents ask
What are the five main animal groups?
The vertebrate groups children learn in Year 1 are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Mammals have hair or fur and feed their young on milk, birds have feathers, and reptiles have dry, scaly skin. Invertebrates such as insects come later.
What is an omnivore?
An omnivore eats both plants and animals. Humans, pigs and badgers are omnivores. A carnivore, such as a lion or an owl, eats mainly meat, and a herbivore, such as a rabbit or a cow, eats only plants.
How can we use the garden birds sheet?
Put out some bird seed, sit by a window for ten minutes and see which of the four birds your child can spot. A park or a walk along a hedge works just as well. It is free to print, so take a fresh copy each time.
