Free plants worksheets
Plants are studied in Years 1, 2 and 3 of the national curriculum. In Year 1, children name common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees, and describe the basic parts of flowering plants. In Year 2, they watch seeds and bulbs grow and find out that plants need water, light and a suitable temperature. In Year 3, they learn what roots, stems, leaves and flowers do, and the part flowers play in pollination and seed dispersal.
These four sheets, for ages 5 to 8, follow that order: the parts of a plant, deciduous and evergreen trees, how a seed grows, and inside a flower.
Children name common plants and trees and their parts, find out what plants need to grow, and in Year 3 learn what roots, stems, leaves and flowers each do.
What changes from year to year
Year 1 is about naming and noticing: which tree is which, and what a petal or root looks like. Year 2 asks how plants grow and what they need. Year 3 asks why each part matters, such as roots taking in water. Later, Year 5 looks at how plants reproduce and Year 6 at how living things are classified. A pot of cress or a bean on the windowsill works at every stage.
Questions parents ask
What are the parts of a plant?
The main parts are the roots, stem, leaves and flowers. Roots hold the plant in place and take in water, the stem carries water and holds the plant up, leaves use sunlight to make food, and flowers make seeds.
What do plants need to grow?
Plants need water, light and a suitable temperature, which is what Year 2 children find out. Year 3 adds air, nutrients from the soil and room to grow. Try growing two seeds, one in a dark cupboard and one on a windowsill, and compare.
Are these plant sheets free?
Yes. All four plant sheets are free to print and share, with no sign-up. They also work well on a nature walk: take a clipboard and look for real examples.
