Phonics teaches children to link sounds to letters, then blend those sounds to read words. In Reception, the early learning goals expect children to say a sound for each letter of the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs, and to read words by sound-blending. In Year 1, the national curriculum asks them to respond quickly with the right sound for all 40+ phonemes and to read accurately by blending.

These four sheets, for ages 4 to 6, cover CVC words such as pig, hat and bus, the digraphs sh, ch and th, and rhyming words, which help children hear the separate sounds inside words.

Children learn the sounds that letters and groups of letters make, then blend them to read words and split words into sounds to spell them. In June of Year 1 there is a short phonics screening check.

    Phonics phases and school years

Many schools describe phonics in phases. The phase names come from older guidance and are not part of the national curriculum, and each school's phonics programme orders the sounds a little differently. Broadly, single letter sounds and CVC words come early in Reception, digraphs such as sh, ch and th follow later in Reception, and alternative spellings of sounds come in Year 1. The phonics screening check in June of Year 1 shows how secure this is.

    Questions parents ask

    What does CVC mean?

CVC stands for consonant, vowel, consonant. CVC words, such as cat, sun and dog, have three sounds and are usually among the first words children blend to read and write.

    What is a digraph?

A digraph is two letters that make one sound, such as sh in shop, ch in chin and th in thumb. The early learning goal is for children to know at least 10 digraphs by the end of Reception.

Should I follow my school's phonics scheme?

Yes, where you can. Schools use a phonics programme that teaches sounds in a set order, often with set actions or rhymes. Ask the teacher which sounds your child has learnt so far, and use these sheets for those sounds.
